historic campaign With the Premier League title already secured, Chelsea, also
decided to make history by securing their 30th win of the season
also becoming the first top-flight team in history
to win 30 games in a 38-game season. With their 5-1 victory against Sunderland
on Sunday, Chelsea become the third team in top-flight history to win 30
or more games in a season, and the first since Liverpool did so in the
pre-Premier League era in May 1979.
Goals
from Willian, Eden Hazard, Pedro and Michy Batshuayi (two) cancelled out an
early strike from Javier Manquillo to ensure that Antonio Conte's men,
confirmed as Premier League champions earlier this month, made history on Captain
John Terry's 717th Chelsea appearance and final match at Stamford Bridge.
Terry
led the Blues out to a guard of honour from Sunderland players and was
substituted in the 26th minute with a standing ovation from the home
supporters, who had held aloft large commemorative banners and organised a vast
tribute in the Shed End in tribute to the 36-year-old prior to kickoff.
With
their 30th Premier League victory of the season, Chelsea have broken the
competition record set by Jose Mourinho's title-winning Blues teams in the
2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, who both won 29 of their 38 league matches.
The win
also means Conte's men finish the season with 93 points, a tally beaten only by
Chelsea's first Premier League title-winning side in 2004-05.
